1. June 30, 1989 Friday At Cordes junction I waited hours
before a radiator shop down the road from the gas station
could repair my radiator. I had a cheeseburger and fries
at the café. Then I walked around a little. There was a
swamp that looked like a place where people had been
dumping their sewage. A killdeer walked ahead of me
screeching.
2. February 7, 2002 Went to the writer's meeting with my
essay "The Joy of Catalogs and my Casino Guitar" and no
one showed and then I called Bobbie Bookhout and she said
oops I said it was the seventh but it's next week! Shoot.
I went over to Timber Wolf and had a couple of beers. It
was hard to finish the second. I took Noodles over to the
Unitarian Church in my truck and we had a short walk. A
killdeer was calling in the black night sky. Why killdeers
fly at night? I have been taking Noodles over in the truck
and having long fast running walks with her over there at
the church.
3. Elliot and Cooper Roads 9/23/2010 901TH TRIP. I WENT
AT FIVE IN THE MORNING. It was dark. A full moon was in
the west, but it was still dark and I had to identify
birds by call: the killdeer, the mockingbird, the towhee,
the verdin, the Gila. There was a red light on the distant
water tower. When the sun came up, the moon just
disappeared. It sounds impossible, but that's what I
remember. A team of Geese Canadienses flew by. Twelve. No
Inkies.
4. McQueen and Elliot Roads 05/15/2004 Drove clean across
the field. A killdeer pair was doing that busted wing
thing.
5. Elliot and Cooper Roads 03/31/2007 Drove over for fun
after not getting much done on my grammar/writing book.
SAW an unidentified SANDPIPER: bigger than a killdeer.
Short, narrow, upturned beak. Several of them. Not
solitary, then.
6. Elliot and Cooper Roads 05/25/2003 Few birds. Log H
shrike. bnstilt, killdeer, mallard, verdin. dullsville.
heard a gambel's quail.
7. Sun Lakes 5/17/2017 Funny; I found a reclaimed water
pond just above Mysterious Puddle. No wonder I always
heard killdeer at Mysterious Puddle. Fresh water Asiatic
clam Corbicula on shore.
8. Elliot and Cooper Roads 11/24/2012 Funny; no killdeer.
One of the firemen was cleaning the elk head of the elk he
had shot with an arrow. I walked to Gilbert. Water flowing
there. When I got back, I talked to one of the firemen for
a while while the other guy kept picking away at the elk.

11. Elliot and Cooper Roads 08/27/2006 My birthday WATER
WATER EVERYWHERE! At last there was some water. I took
Honey the dog. I thought I saw a spotted sandpiper, but
I'm not sure. Same goes with a Greater yellowlegs. Too far
away. LOTS OF DRAGONFLIES. Killdeers loud. Ponds 7, 8, 9,
10, and 11 full of water.
12. Elliot and Cooper Roads 11/8/2011 NO KILLDEER! I
popped over at nine o'clock. It was brisk and cool.
13. McQueen and Elliot Roads 05/25/2002 Not many birds
here today. Not even the usual killdeer. Of course there
were mourning doves, but I didn't record them. It's
Memorial Day weekend. I washed the car at the gas station
on the corner. six buck automatic car wash.
14. Elliot and Cooper Roads 06/22/2002 Nothing much here
except a coot, a killdeer, a lot of black-necked stilts
and some generic ducks.
15. 2125 North Villas Lane 02/07/2005 Sally and I went
out back at night and heard a killdeer flying high up at
night! this was the trip when we went to see jeff play in
Tucson.
16. McQueen and Elliot Roads 07/13/2002 The icky canal
has flowed over and still there is a pond of sorts in the
field and that's where you see the killdeers.
17. El Mirage Pond 09/15/2002 There were coots,
killdeers, and female red-winged blackbirds here today.
The pond was FULL of water.
18. Generic Place in Chandler 02/14/2003 This was at
Sonny's school when I took him in the morning. It was
foggy at first and it had rained all night. There was one
killdeer on the way in and two when I drove out. Sonny
didn't want his valentine's card because his picture on it
gave him a double chin.
19. Elliot and Cooper Roads 9/17/2010 Today I went and
put my lawn chair in the grass on the south side of the
fire station. People drove by. I was in the shade of a
tree and was able to study the Spanish notebooks for two
or three hours. It was 108° today, but it was okay under
the tree on the green grass. Up there under the roof with
the cement was considerably hotter, I thought. I was
surprised that it took me forever to go through just two
of the notebooks. I'm thinking of reading the notebooks
into my digital recorder and then downloading them on my
computer and listening to them. Mr. KILLDEER was there
alone as he was before.
20. Elliot and Cooper Roads 10/2/2010 Trip 907. Well, I
went late and studied Spanish. It was pretty hot, so
tomorrow I'll get up and go really early and get all my
studying done. PLENTY OF BREEZE. The flags were flapping.
Steve called and drove over and we sat and he read a story
by Fernando "El Espejo in El Ático." NO Turkey Vultures
today! AND THE KILLDEER WASN'T THERE. I was sad that he
wasn't there in the grass as he has been. Maybe tomorrow.
The shade is not complete under the trees, so perhaps up
under the roof down the sidewalk would be better.
21. Elliot and Cooper Roads 03/21/2004 Windy. Nice. At
one point hundreds of ducks appeared in the sky. Some
quite high. Talked to a guy in the truck there. He said he
saw a Harris's hawk, but then again he didn't know what a
killdeer was. He had been working there for two years.
