Paulette ChartierThat diet pop will kill you.
Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at 10:16pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeDiet pop, also known as favored water, is better. And more healthful than bottled water. The last guy that told me diet soda was "poison" was smoking a cigarette. Of all the things to waste a single second worrying about with all the dangers about me: heat stroke, wild dogs, rattlesnakes, stickers, drunken retired rednecks.... :)

Jim ZelenskiTom, listen to Mom, who knows what's best for you
Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 8:18am MST
Tom Hascall ColeI used to to hot hikes; I'd go to South Mountain when it was 115°, but as I got a little older I found that I just couldn't cool off enough in that heat. 111 wasn't that bad yesterday. In the winter I would jog a little, but in the head that is OUT. You overheat in about half a block. You'll die.
Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 8:37am MST
Jim ZelenskiRemember (as a teen) working summer daytime jobs out in the desert (clearing the desert and building/expanding the Ben Avery shooting range north of Phx.) and there being a strict requirement to wear wide-brim hat, kerchief, long sleeve shirts and pants (& of course boots), so as to prevent dehydration. Also required frequent water breaks. No pop.
Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 8:52am MST
Tom Hascall ColeBoyer Rickel and I worked in the cotton fields a couple of summers. Ah, the shooting range. I remember when we took our students to the superstitions and we shot .22s the cowpokes always gave them a lecture: "Yes, this here target shooting is the most popular sport in America." Dream world. I heard them say it lots of times. Just because every granny's got a gun doesn't mean we love target shooting. I often thought of this because I once bought a .22 and had no place to target shoot. There were scant few ranges, but a bowling alley on every corner. I think bowling is a bit more popular. I hate bull throwers like those cowpokes.
Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 8:56am MST
Jim ZelenskiLearning to shoot is certainly a skill to be mastered (& I went out to do it a few times), but after a short while I got bored with it and couldn't see the purpose - plenty of other things to occupy my time. As I undertand it, there are way more guns out there today, but fewer shooters (owners).
Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 9:03am MST
Paulette ChartierI believe the most popular sport in the world is Dragon Boat Racing....... or so I've been told.

Monday, June 2, 2014 at 1:00pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeI used a Grand Symphony Mini Taylor, a small guitar for the polka. It doesn't have big sound but it's amazing for a mini and I put 13's (big strings) on it. My main battleaxe is the Red Variax 300 from Indonesia. I love the thing and its back-up is a Chinese model, that pretty black guitar with the tortoise shell pick guard. The others I don't use so much anymore. I added the tortoise shell and so here's the Variax taste test.

Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 7:27pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeHere's an essay with Van Horn in it. I can't get the Spanish version out easily as it's mixed in like flour and eggs, but you can get the idea. Oh, I can edit in foolbook so I can cut out the Spanish. Agate Agate is known for its bands of color and is one of the most common semiprecious stones in the display cases of rock hounds. It comes in a wide variety of colors. Every town used to have a rock shop. In fact, in our neighborhood, a man converted his house into a rock shop. His name was Mr. Van Horn. He liked to show us his treasures. One day he showed my brother and me a slab of agate that he had polished. “Look, boys,” he said. “I'm going to the moon.” It was as if someone had painted a spaceship on the slab of rock. The agate was almost black, and on a dark background, there was a white rocket of chalcedony shooting jets and flames of yellow quartz behind.

Jim ZelenskiAs a human of Polish descent, I say, "Nicely Done" (or, "ładnie wykonane")! Many years ago Judy & I decided to go out to the Polish Club (I think it was somewhere near Boulder) for dancing the Polka. Were we ever not ready for that! At the time I was an avid distance runner & played basketball regularly, but the evening of Polka blew me away; never sweated so much in my life, and slept for a dozen hours that night and next day! As a small child I remember my parents cranking up the old record player with Polkas, clearing the floor (the house, at that time, was arranged as a doughnut or race track) and doing the Polka round and round - they had a blast.
Monday, August 5, 2013 at 5:04pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeWell, I was going to take up dancing. Swing. There's this girl at the saloon I frequent and she knows all about it. I finally looked at the style she did and it was Lindy Hop where you throw your partner in the air. It's scary and I'm too old. I felt the best dancers erred in dancing too fast --WAY to fast, the result being that they were never ever able to really "stick" a wild move-- just survive it. This video I have post toastied before but I like the singer/guitarist and went to see her in S. Az. Dig these dancers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl6c4_F7xuo

Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 3:57pm MST
Matthew AldersonI liked it. Do you always shake your instrument when you finish? Metronomes work best when they are broken I say. And your bass notes probably sound fine in person, I think it is just the recording. I didn't notice that they were over dampened to be honest.

Tom Hascall ColeThis is a new style for me and I'm putting it in half of my act now so I get better at it. The thumb pick is the key as without it you get so tired that your hand falls off in under a minute. My old folk picking was without a pick and it is a physical struggle to finish a long song without your hand just giving up.

Jenny Anna LindeFantastic! The story had something to do with a big, black bear and a very tiny dog and how they became friends, don't you think?

Tom Hascall ColeI don't understand Facebook. I wrote a note to myself here and suddenly everyone is looking at this video.

Jenny Anna LindeI really like it, Tom. What/who is in that intriguing crate in the background?
Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 7:20am MST
Tom Hascall ColeI don't know why everyone is seeing this dumb video. All I did was write a note to myself. The crate is for the dog. There's some training system that has you put him in a crate. He never got locked in there, but it always gave me the creeps.

Kurt AldersonThat's great, Tom! After spending about 5 years in the southern states, it makes me nostalgic, too. But I'm not leaving California.
Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 6:44pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeI don't like the south.
Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 7:10pm MST
Kurt AldersonAre you referring to the heat and humidity, the ice storms, the tornados, the hurricanes, the lingering attitudes, the mosquitos, the gnats, ... It was a great experience that I wouldn't trade, and there's some great people down there. Kind of like some of your Republican friends. Good folks, just a bit shocking in some of the views they hold.
Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 7:22pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeWell, you know by my guitar playing that I was born in Kentucky. I'm working on Merle Travis style, which takes years but it's beginning to work for me. I've only played a little in public once. Today I didn't have the strength to practice it. It takes strength. The South. I don't like the hurricanes. It's not the lingering attitudes; I live in Arizona and you just hang with progressives and fellow atheists. No problem. I just feel a newness out west that someplace like Louisiana doesn't have. I don't like the fact that there is no desert there. I don't like the Gulf Coast. It was there that the color "battleship gray" was coined. I don't like fishing in the gulf and dredging around for icky reds that are trash fish somehow promoted to the status of game fish. I lived in Houston for a while. I am afraid of alligators. You go fishing near Houston and one might get you. I'm sure, however, that it's my ignorance that makes me disinterested in the south.

Charles Wayman MitchellI think I need to get a cold one myself! Thanks for the inspiration.
Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 3:04pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeSome labeled the following Mexican journal entry I wrote "Ode to a Beer." Very appropriate here: May 16, 2000 I'd wake deep in the night and pet Noodles, and then reach down and grasp with knobby, sun-browned hand another bottle of Boston Lager. Having prised its top off, I would then pour the contents down my thirsty, beer-starved throat. How Boston Lager dances on the tonsils! And how my parched gullet rejoiced at the cold flowing rush of life nurturing, life sustaining -- indeed, life GRANTING Boston Lager! And how its intoxicants would rush to my waiting bloodstream and then extend their hypnotic tendrils into my anxious, pulsing brain thus lulling me off into hallucinogenic seaside slumber once more....

Ralph DurhamThat's great!

Lesley SanftWell done Tom how is it going over there?
Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 4:19pm MST
Tom Hascall ColeLesley, it's going well. I'm playing guitar at night and making software for my nephew and some for myself also in the morning and entering birds from 37 years of records from Mexico and making a web page to match them and tutoring some kid in Spanish so he doesn't flunk out of high school and writing fun songs and adding them and others to my 'toire and diddling in my garden and drinking lots of beer at the supermarket bar which is my FAVORITE salt lick and riding my bike 11 miles a day to my favorite birding site where I record all the birds and ride home on the Western Canal and my skin is almost black from the sun so I'm using sunscreen and my ponytail is a foot long. HAVE YOU BEEN ON MORE TRIPS?

Tom Hascall ColeFunny; that's how I remember cartoons. We're gettin' old. Also, I saw your review of my book, The Sands of Pima Arroyo. You were very kind to give it such a detailed and complimentary critique. I'm working on another Spanish autobiography in my crummy Spanish and two guitar books, one entitled Oh, Had They Only Told Me, in which I tell all the stuff my childhood teachers didn't bother to mention that would have made a world of difference, and also a book called tentatively Musical Bridges, Going from Part A to Part B and back again. The Beatles were successful in part because, as Paul put it, "You'd have a song and get stuck." Then John would pop in and help out. What they were stuck for was a BRIDGE.
Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 8:44pm MST
Jim ZelenskiThat's great, Tom - please let me know when your next books are out!
Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 8:46pm MST
Sally Cole I''d give you a five-star review if I wasn't your sister just for the title essay, "The Sands of Pima Arroyo." I wish I'd written that one.

Steve FrizzellThat's really cool, Tom. I've never seen a dove with markings like that. Was that in your back yard?
Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 8:16am MST
Tom Hascall ColeI thought I commented here and said, "Yes, sir!" That bird was in my backyard and I also recently got a lark sparrow there, which is a darned good backyard bird. My comment seems to have vanished.
