In my book, The Intersection, Seventeen Years of Birdprocessing on One Street Corner of the World, I write about the declining numbers of loggerhead shrikes (indeed the virtual decimation of them).
The shrike is a bird that looks a little like a mockingbird but is bigger and stronger. The bird impales insects, lizards, mice, and even other birds on the spines of cacti and bushes and commonly on barbed wire as well. This assures the bird a steady food supply.
